The long wait for Avicii to play Seattle finally ended Wednesday night at the Paramount Theater. Tim Berg is one of the top DJs in the world right now and he is barely in his twenties! Once he took the stage the kids went crazy, with a crowd of mostly high schoolers and other youngsters, they showed the love for sure. And on a school night too.

Next great USC Events coming up in Seattle is Lucky 2012 for St. Patricks Day. Don’t miss out!

Nearly exactly a year after he was here with Curren$y and Nipsey Hussle, last night Dom Kennedy returned to Seattle to play Neumos again, this time for his own show. Some local talent graced the stage first with Royce The Choice and DJ DJ Swerveon. Also from LA same as Dom was Skeme, but it was clear everyone was anxiously waiting for the headliner to pop on stage. He finally did and played some of his older hits as well of some of his newer stuff off of From The Westside With Love II.

The 27-year-old LA Rap Star has hussled on the underground for awhile and is steadily gaining more and more popularity on the scene. With his charisma and loyal fan base he will keep on grind’n(see below) and hopefully start moving up to larger venues next time he comes back to the NW. Oh and he was rocking a Mariners hat, so props for the N-Dub Love.

What a night this was at this Sold Out annual mini music festival! With a stacked Lineup this year’s Deck The Hall Ball was a huge event as always, but with Mumford & Sons, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema Club, Grouplove and of course the Washington locals Death Cab for Cutie, this wasn’t your ordinary concert. Let Review shall we…

Twas the 7th of December and all through Key Arena, people were rocking, even a mouse. Or something like that. Grouplove and Young the People had a lot going for them with high energy solid performances. Two Door Cinema Club is always a good time for a kick ass groove. Foster the People had the people on the move. Death Cab for Cutie set the mood.

Highlight of the night was Cage the Elephant who stole the show with their hard rocking and stage diving set. At one point the lead singer Matt Shultz told the crowd that if he gets knocked unconscious when he is stage diving then to just keep passing his body along throughout the show even through the other acts sets until the show was over. Funny guy who rocks out. BOOM. Check out this little ditty right here.

In One Ear – Cage The Elephant – Deck The Hall Ball

Crowd calmed down slightly for Death Cab’s set but still showing lots of love. When Mumford and Sons finally came on stage at 10 o clock the place went crazy. If you weren’t there you should have been. See for yourself.

Mumford and Sons – Roll Away Your Stone -  Seattle Deck the Hall Ball

Don’t ask me why all these new hip bands have the word “the” in the middle of their group name because I don’t know. What I do know is everyone had a ball! Thanks to: The End, AEG, Key Arena, Mumford and Sons, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema Club, Grouplove and Death Cab for Cutie!

Now I know I should have done a post about Dom back in the winter when he was here with Curren$y, but hey better late than never. And what better time than a couple days after his first official album From the Westside with Love II.  Dom Kennedy is an up and coming rapper hailing from Leimert Park, California, which he proudly reps.  His debut project, 25th Hour, was released in 2008, followed by four other solid mixtapes in the last 3 years (Best After Bobby, FutureStreet/DrugSounds, From the Westside With Love, and The Original Dom Kennedy).  His witty punchlines paired with catchy beats makes him a stand out in the new school..  All of his projects have had a unique balance of reflective tracks about real shit and up tempo party songs.  One of his most reflective songs is off his first tape, 25th Hour, called Dreams Don’t Come True.

go periscopeThis has been a wild ride, like a roller coaster that isn’t the same once you go on it for the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th time. Which for me is a blast and satisfies my musical appetite. To sum up Go Periscope, one must have an inner chi to not give up on the first song or judge them by one song. From Seattle (no WA needed cause there’s only one. Google it, sucka we’re no …….ville or burge), Go Periscope is a lot like Charlie Kelly. If you don’t know who he is, well, all you need to know is “Wildcard, Bitches!!“.

The two man group has three albums out and a single. Continuing on to what I was previously talking about, each album offers a different style to who they are. Self titled album, Go Periscope is very high on the electro-pop side. It reminds me a lot of Postal Service in the way they filter noises in and out of the background. Their voices could be linked very closely to that of Owl City, but there is much more of a beat on their tracks. My favorite flavors from this album are Breathe Deception, Dream This Dream, and Escape The Season.

Breathe Deception

Dream This Dream

Escape The Season

For the second time on the ride, I listened to their album titled Remixes. A nice little diddy with four songs which offers much more of a dance feel. All the songs are a mash-up style with a hint of electro-pop. There is an exception to one of the remixes, Black & Yellow (Go Periscope Remix) – Wiz Khalifa & Alphaville, which still has pop with a 80′s twist. This track is without a doubt my favorite from this album and a top 5 remix of Black & Yellow. I give the song two feet thumbs up!!

Black & Yellow (Go Periscope Remix) – Wiz Khalifa & Alphaville

As for the last time on the ride, the third album and for my ear buds the best album titled The Mixtape leaves me excited for the bands future. The album is another mash-up style with some remixes, yet different from the mash-ups tracks on Remixes. You can tell, without a doubt, that this band is evolving in their sound and enjoys what they do. The Mixtape has a lot of great tracks featuring Daft Punk, Drake, The Glitch Mob, and much more. I’ll link from the album their rendition of Forever – Drake feat. Eminem & Lil’ Wayne. I enjoy the great vibe and the rad work they did with Emimen’s vocals flowing very well.

Forever (Go Periscope Remix) – Drake feat. Eminem & Lil’ Wayne

The review is done and Go Periscope has a concert on the horizon. They’ll be @ Studio Seven in Seattle on Saturday, June 25th. It’s something I’ll be checking out just to see what I’m sure is an “all our heart into it” performance.

Canadians were everywhere at the Gorge over the Memorial weekend. Canuck chants here and there leaving me wondering if fur trading was on the rise. However, the Canadians cries were answered on Monday when a two man gig from Montreal made the grassy knoll above the main stage get down.

Chromeo, whose musical style promotes shaking what your momma gave you in a classy 60′s way, but to the sound of 80′s dance was absolutely a killer time. The pit for the main stage was already pretty full leading up to Chromeo’s set, but once they came on the pit had festival goers rushing down the hill to be apart of it. Their sound is purely up lifting and I promise once you hear a song you’ll be moving something to the beat, if not you’re probably a robot.

I had been looking forward to this show for awhile, mainly because of Shad who I hopped on the train last summer after seeing his Fresh Prince themed viral music video, The Old Prince Still Lives at Home, a tribute to coupon clippers and cheap skates with the most on point ode to Fresh Prince music video ever. I had heard a couple of K-OS (pronounced Chaos) songs in the past, but hadn’t done enough listening as I should have because everyone I talked to at the show was pumped he was in Seattle.

Shad – Rose Garden

Let’s start with Shad, full name Shadrach Kabango, of Rwandan heritage, goes by Shad K or simply Shad, claims to be the “biggest thing out of Canada since Pamela’s double D’s.” Originally from London, Ontraio and now resides in Vancouver, BC no stranger to touring the US as he toured on Warped Tour last year, not surprising as many successful hip hop artists have got the start when they were small on the rock infested Warped Tour including Eminem and Atmosphere. Besides the clever lines, the unique name and the Fresh Prince music video his lyrics have a message that set himself apart from the typical cliched noise of today’s hip hop. His new album TSOL comes in much harder than Old Prince with some rock influenced tracks and without the poetry themes from the old albums. It is clear that Shad is onto something new and will no doubt catch on soon when the masses start to take notice of his undeniable talent. Nice of him to come down from the North for the tour.

After Shad’s set the rain picked up and people who were out on the deck crowded in for the headliner of the show. k-os walked on stage with a full band to back him up, michael jackson tee, and big afro to command the focus of the entire room in one second. Playing a wide variety of tunes, the whole crowd was vibin’ him the whole time from his reggae influenced songs to his pop sounding tracks. I remember one of k-os songs back from ’02 called Superstarr, Pt. Zero and was really the only song I did remember of his. I was glad to see he still had it and note that it is clear why he was the headliner and that he still deserves to be part of the music scene and hopefully will remain so for a long time.

Overall a great show all around, highlights for me was seeing k-os for the first time, talking with Shad after the show he was real cool talking with fans and a very humble dude. Also the fact that at one point in Shad’s freestyle he threw out the phrase “energy efficientsteez“….siiick.

This weekend at bumbershoot between concerts I decided to check out the taping of the Chris Hardwick Podcast. He’s a comedian you can follow @nerdist and nerdist.com. He brought out David O’Doherty, Doug Benson, and Garfunkel and Oates to help entertain and fill the hour.

I spend so much time looking/listening to music I never really get a chance to explore comedy, it was a good change of pace. Ironic that both David O’Doherty and Garfunkel and Oates are musical comedy acts? Check Them Out:

David O’Doherty – the person the text was about

Garfunkel and Oates – worst song medley

howl
Howl” was one part animation, one part court trial, and one part documentary. And by that I mean the movie focuses on mashing together Ginsberg live reading “Howl” to animated pieces that attempt to put images to the words, the court trial that took place to decide whether the publishing company that published “Howl” was being obscene, and snippets of interviews and quotes from Ginsberg’s life throughout and after the trial. To elaborate, Allen Ginsberg was a prominent “Beat Generation” figurehead from the ’50s who wrote about and championed personal freedoms. “Howl” is notable for its mention of homosexual relationships, but Ginsberg said the poem really stressed the freedom to talk “frankly” about any subject. James Franco did a great job with this role, and overall I think the filmmakers did a good job with this movie. After all, it is about scandalous poems from the 1950′s, and how do you put a face on that while also keeping it mildy entertaining? The theatre was packed and it got some good laughs at parts. I guess the main complaint was that there wasn’t enough background information on Ginsberg’s personal and professional life which led him up to/explains why he wrote Howl and the other poems. That would’ve been a nice touch, but I still think it was an interesting and well-played movie. It was also a resounding reminder of how far we’ve come on social issues, yet how far we still have to go.

Having said that, SIFF is almost over! Might I suggest Robogeisha at the Harvard Exit at 8:30? :)

wa-wa-wa-Welcome to another crunk review. I saw broken bells and the morning benders at showbox market last week (on 5/25) and came out a bigger fan of the morning benders, and lesser towards broken bells. I was with my friend dan and these are some choice words he said i couldn’t agree with more!

Its famous people putting something together quickly and being able to release it simply because they are well known.  They are obviously very talented, but they don’t have a lot of material, and played for maybe an hour at most.would have been cool if they tried some of their songs with their other groups.  If I could go back in time I would stay home and listen to this on my stereo.

My thoughts exactly! the first thing I wrote was “sell your ticket, the first song should have been the last!”

Dan went on to say:

at least we saw some hot babes and swooped into the VIP Club. Those were the highlights. And watching you stalk the Morning Benders(see below) and singing in the Lusty Lady, telling the one chick she was like a caged animal..(also, see below)Good night overall, worth it to see your antics.

Woah dude that all happened! That woman is in a glass cage! i’m showing her my morning benders album and yelling “you’re in a fucking cage!!!”  btw, the Morning Benders are rad. signed my vinyl with “YOU ARE THE HOMIE”

So i could go on and on about how the broken bells didn’t meet my expectations but were still good.

final thoughts:bitter-sweet

Final crunk quote:

seriously this shit was wweak! had a good time because my friends were here. ok shit wasn’t weak. but it wasn’t neary expectTations(i think i meant “nearly up to my expectations”) if I could travel in time, I would have charged people 3x my ticket price and invested in poop aka furtilizer

If you want some background info/concert calendar  *ReAD YE’ oLD PrEViOUs ArtICle* Also, I 100% recommend you buy an album. These guys make very good music.

So this concert was completely engaging. To get a little taste, the concert started with:Boy Toy
The band came onstage in drag and you quickly understand their personality and motivation. They’re making music to have fun, and help other people have fun. Every song had the entire crowd moving in one way or another.

WOW! I like they fully cover the rock genre, and electronic. A fan of either would have a blast here. This is fucking sick.

So i was having a good time. Not quite jumping around, not just chilling, but in the middle. The music made me feel so comfortable it wouldn’t surprise anyone if i had taken my clothes off to dance around, or just sat in the corner on my phone. One of those times where the concert sounds better than the albums.

The energy kept flowing, i don’t actually remember when they played this, but it happened:Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second

For mass appeal and public acceptance, Starfucker’s name is like a chokehold. Its crippling. You would have already heard of them if their name was starfudger or donkey puncher, rusty trombone, cock waffle, cum quat, dirt sandwich, pabst smears, turd burgular, glory hole, or even dickle dixie dykes. It just sucks because these guys really kick ass. And:

Jeez they brought da ruckus, da funk, and da party. i wish i could crunk review this

I want you to listen to this next song 3 times in a row, because thats how my night went. The concert ended with this song, then I played it in my car twice on my drive home.
Pop-Song

All in all, these guys are the opposite of “too cool for school”. 4 dudes that wanted to make fun music and succeeded. I call them american heroes because its seems like they’re enjoying their freedom, doing whatever the fuck they want, but having a positive impact on their fans/listeners. After 2 album releases and having a song in a target commercial, they’re gaining quite a bit of popularity. I hope to see them for for many years to come.
