I have been paying attention to Grieves since his album Irreversible released in 2007. He has really grown into a great artist with a unique style. It seems like Rhymesayers has really given him the confidence to become his own artist…such an awesome label.

This post is less about how long I have been listening to Grieves and more about how amazing it is when he returns to Seattle on his tours. He always gives his all — so much passion, confidence and enthusiasm…this show was no different. The Crocodile was bumpin and the energy in the room was all you could ask for and more from a show.

I am a huge fan of Grieves most recently released album, Together/Apart. That album is REAL…easily my favorite. If you haven’t heard Grieves yet, you need to check him out. With Atmosphere getting older and seemingly having his best and most interesting work behind him, I think Grieves is the next artist to push into the scene of hip-hop that can be so bland.

If you like hip-hop and Seattle, then you are a lot like Grieves. Next time he is in town it would be foolish to pass up such an affordable show that is worth more than the ticket price. Love that NW hip-hop!

Check my favorite Grieves track and video below.

Wilco

Walking into the Paramount to see a rock show feels like somewhat of a contradiction. As I strutted in–wearing jeans and high-tops–the thought, “am I under-dressed?” crossed my mind. The interior architecture resembled something royal–which is appropriate because the royal family of indie-rock was about to take stage.

If you haven’t seen Wilco live, DO IT! They have some seriously talented musicians and an incredibly impressive light show to boot. Jeff Tweedy was, by no surprise, on point. His voice never misses a pitch.

The musician that took the show though was Nels Cline, Wilco’s guitarist. It’s imposible to describe the feeling–knowing that I was watching one of the greatest guitarists I will ever see.

Basically, Wilco puts on a DooooOOOOOoooopE show!

-LaJack

Found this video on youtube from the show. As far as audience shot videos come, this one’s audio is pretty great and gives you an idea of the awesome light show they had.

The long wait for Avicii to play Seattle finally ended Wednesday night at the Paramount Theater. Tim Berg is one of the top DJs in the world right now and he is barely in his twenties! Once he took the stage the kids went crazy, with a crowd of mostly high schoolers and other youngsters, they showed the love for sure. And on a school night too.

Next great USC Events coming up in Seattle is Lucky 2012 for St. Patricks Day. Don’t miss out!

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr came to Seattle with Fitz and the Tantrums this last weekend and the show was a fucking blast.

Dejj came on stage with the brightest coats i’d ever seen, just short of having LEDs built in. The extra glow from the blacklights didn’t hurt either.

Nearly exactly a year after he was here with Curren$y and Nipsey Hussle, last night Dom Kennedy returned to Seattle to play Neumos again, this time for his own show. Some local talent graced the stage first with Royce The Choice and DJ DJ Swerveon. Also from LA same as Dom was Skeme, but it was clear everyone was anxiously waiting for the headliner to pop on stage. He finally did and played some of his older hits as well of some of his newer stuff off of From The Westside With Love II.

Dom Kennedy – When I Come Around

Nipsey Hussle and Dom Kennedy – I Need That

The 27-year-old LA Rap Star has hussled on the underground for awhile and is steadily gaining more and more popularity on the scene. With his charisma and loyal fan base he will keep on grind’n(see below) and hopefully start moving up to larger venues next time he comes back to the NW. Oh and he was rocking a Mariners hat, so props for the N-Dub Love.

What a night this was at this Sold Out annual mini music festival! With a stacked Lineup this year’s Deck The Hall Ball was a huge event as always, but with Mumford & Sons, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema Club, Grouplove and of course the Washington locals Death Cab for Cutie, this wasn’t your ordinary concert. Let Review shall we…

Twas the 7th of December and all through Key Arena, people were rocking, even a mouse. Or something like that. Grouplove and Young the People had a lot going for them with high energy solid performances. Two Door Cinema Club is always a good time for a kick ass groove. Foster the People had the people on the move. Death Cab for Cutie set the mood.

Highlight of the night was Cage the Elephant who stole the show with their hard rocking and stage diving set. At one point the lead singer Matt Shultz told the crowd that if he gets knocked unconscious when he is stage diving then to just keep passing his body along throughout the show even through the other acts sets until the show was over. Funny guy who rocks out. BOOM. Check out this little ditty right here.

In One Ear – Cage The Elephant – Deck The Hall Ball

Crowd calmed down slightly for Death Cab’s set but still showing lots of love. When Mumford and Sons finally came on stage at 10 o clock the place went crazy. If you weren’t there you should have been. See for yourself.

Mumford and Sons – Roll Away Your Stone -  Seattle Deck the Hall Ball

Don’t ask me why all these new hip bands have the word “the” in the middle of their group name because I don’t know. What I do know is everyone had a ball! Thanks to: The End, AEG, Key Arena, Mumford and Sons, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema Club, Grouplove and Death Cab for Cutie!

Seattle’s Decibel Festival is much more than an electronic music festival sprinkled throughout the 206.  And one of the things that makes DB so unique is the element of visual arts and multimedia design.  While many are drawn to the musical headliners like Moby, nothing encompasses the visual stimulation of DB more than Thursday night’s Amon Tobin show at the Paramount.

Decibel had the distinct honor of hosting the US premiere of the epic visual showcase, ISAM.  It’s hard to describe exactly what ISAM is.  Is it music?  Is it a laser/lights show?  Is it both?  Is there a message or a story to be found within the ever-moving and evolving blocks that bounce around in the realm that is presented and projected before you?  Simply put, NO!  The only way to adequately describe the ISAM experience is as a complete and total visual skull-fucking!

ISAM takes you on an adventure of shift-shaping and ever evolving visual stimulation set to what I can only describe as an original score of electronic, industrial, ambient trance.  Alone the sounds and music might bore the average fan of electronica, however combined with the insane visual effects it is hard not to get sucked in.  With so many, apparently, moving pieces in this multimedia maze it is impossible to keep focus on just one element.

Enjoy these clips and make sure you check out the other DB Festival shows.  If you’re looking for a little mischief join me for the Designer Drugs show tonight (Saturday, October 1) at the Showbox Market.

If you wanted to go crazy with thousands of the biggest and most diverse type of people having a good time then you came to the right place. The Gorge is the best atmosphere for any type of show, but this was one that really benefitted from being right on the river with a campground for people to go nuts at before, during and after the show. First off, there were fairies, then we had glitter and body paint people, then we had the Deadmau5 helmet wearers, then the Tutu rockers, the Tiger Suit man, the StormTrooper costume guys, the bikini lingerie sporters, the light up glove ravers, glowstick kids, neon workout gear and bikini tops, shirts off dance on, and then some Frat boy meatheads mixed in with some sorority bikini girls and even nerds sprinkled in their too. But what a crowd.

Nero – Killed it – Best moment: When promises dropped. Kids went nuts. And being backstage..I was excited because had never been backstage before. What a way to see a show.

Nero – BBC Radio1 Essential Mix 11/13/2010

Rusko – Maniac on stage – loving his beats almost as much as everyone else. At one point I think he wished he could jump in the pit and look up and watch himself so he could have as much fun as the crowd. And his hair is epic.

Sunday Girl vs. Rusko “Stop Hey” by Rusko

Pretty Lights – Crowd calmed down for a bit and wasn’t going as crazy for the tunes, until the light show popped…they ate that shit up.

Pretty Lights vs Radiohead vs Nirvana vs NIN by prettylights

Overall, amazing show. Electronic show at the Gorge will beat any other venue hands down. The only unfortunate part was not being able to see all of the acts as all 3 stages were going at the same time and they moved The Crystal Method from the main stage to the other stage at same time as Kaskade ‘s set. Predicament…Yea, Sophie’s Decision right there.  But Kaskade rocked for over 2 hours so it was possible to do some overlap if you really wanted. Kaskade was the winner of the day for sure though.

Kaskade (feat. Mindy Gledhill) – Eyes (Extended Mix) by Kaskade

Well done to the folks at Identity…Well fucking done. To whoever said that a summer long touring electronic festival was not possible in the United States….FUCK OFF

Waking up Monday morning wasn’t easy. Bumbershoot AfterDark on sunday was wild and loud and i’m freakin pissed off because I didn’t get to steal a sign that said:

Sunday was a slower for me, because i was prepping my brain and body for the Bumbershoot Afterdark party currated by the people at Decibel Festival. First was Tennis, then Das Racist, Warpaint, and Butthole Surfers. Also saw Toro Y Moi and the Afterdark craziness.

I meant to write this post a couple days ago, but due to an unwanted – but probably earned from my bender of shows – illness, I wasn’t able to finish it until now. And I can start this with saying that Joel out did everyones expectations. Damn. I love mau5 music, but don’t really like the man inside the mask. Not that I’ve ever met him before, but he kind of talks like he’s a god (Read the interview). However, after Vancouver was blessed to have the first show with his entire set up, I might have to agree that he is one.

Here’s the clip from Lollapalloza (and it’s not even the entire set-up!)

And it wasn’t just a visual masterpiece. The mix of new and old tunes had the 4,000 people at the Vancouver Pacific Colosseum  methodically moving as one sweaty-hypnotized crowd. It was easily one of the most well orchestrated, cued up, and organized shows I’ve ever been too. I got everything I wanted from a Deadmau5 show and more. I could write an essay on this experience, but all I’m going to say is buy a ticket anyway possible. For all of you Seattleites who will be catching the tour tomorrow, I envy you.

Here’s the preview of the new track in the video,  Professional Griefers:

First up that i saw was Solzilla the thrilla in manilla. Dude killed it. Brought grynch and the physics on stage to keep going. the entire show was fantastic. Old songs and new, heard people laughing and singing.

Thought I’d throw a couple tracks out there. These gems have been keeping me sane the past few weeks.

Santa Cruz based Minnesota has been turning out some of my favorite remixes lately and after seeing him throw down at Entropy at The King Cat Theater last weekend I feel compelled to tell everyone!

Also, if you’re not following Minnesota or MartyParty, they’ve created some songs together (calling themselves Deathstar) and below are a couple they recently dropped that are pretty wild…

Elfkowitz, out of Chicago, just dropped an album called Rent Money. It’s full of eargasms, check out this collaboration with Mimi Page.

Heyoka is bringing more of that Bay Area bwomp.  This track has been on repeat for at least 4 days.

wishbone DJ Crocodile

As a fan of electronic music it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to dance the night away. If you throw Daft Punk into the mix it’s bound to get a little wild, and if you pour some Chromeo on top your night becomes down right funk-a-delic. The duo known as Wishbone had The Crocodile Cafe bouncing as they brought their Daft Punk vs Chromeo set to life Saturday night.  The tandem of turntablists consists of DJ Booger and Boom Box Kid, who in the recent months they have managed to get capacity crowds two-stepping at various venues in the pacific northwest.  Last night was no different.

Flux Pavillion: Bass Cannon

Besides being sent Around the World in a state of RAGE! the two got right down to it with blasts from the Bass Cannon courtesy of Flux Pavilion and other bass heavy favorites.  But one thing that sets the ‘Bone apart is the sprinkling of popular indie rock into their electronic dance mix.  Before the sounds of laser beams and intergalactic traffic can become monotonous, Wishbone turns the party into an upbeat sing-a-long with crowd favorites like Florence and the Machines’ “Dog Days Are Over.”

I definitely recommend stopping by the next Wishbone show, they will leave you with a smile on your face and calluses on your little piggies.  Don’t miss out when Wishbone helps anchor the Summer Solstice Party at Nectar in Fremont, June 18, along with another one of my favorite local acts Project Lionheart.  They will also be spinning hits at the Wild Buffalo, in Bellingham, the night before as they represent the ‘Ham at Trashed: Bellingham vs Seattle.

Canadians were everywhere at the Gorge over the Memorial weekend. Canuck chants here and there leaving me wondering if fur trading was on the rise. However, the Canadians cries were answered on Monday when a two man gig from Montreal made the grassy knoll above the main stage get down.

Chromeo, whose musical style promotes shaking what your momma gave you in a classy 60′s way, but to the sound of 80′s dance was absolutely a killer time. The pit for the main stage was already pretty full leading up to Chromeo’s set, but once they came on the pit had festival goers rushing down the hill to be apart of it. Their sound is purely up lifting and I promise once you hear a song you’ll be moving something to the beat, if not you’re probably a robot.

Sister Crayon is a Foursome(not pornstars) from Sacramento that blew me(also non-pornographically) away in the middle of their first song. If you like phantogram, its a similar sound.  I’d guess Tera and Dani are the mainstays as they were entirely the focus on stage front and center during the set.  Tera is the singer and plays some keyboard things(I couldn’t really see) and Dani was just killing her sampler/korg-thing with such finesse I thought she could easily out-play kanye in his stupid new song. Literally those 2 ladies put a massive smile on my face and for a while, I didn’t notice the other guys. My apologies to Nic and Genaro.

Sister Crayon – Here We Never Die
Sister Crayon – I’m Still The Same Person

Sister Crayon SeattleI often take more drunken notes at shows, but they were the opener, and i just wasn’t crunk enough to do a crunk review. Maybe next time. THANKFULLY they’ll be back in Nov on the 24th to support Truckasaurus at chop suey! holler back….

Also, you can download their EP Here:[itunes link="http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/sister-crayon/id345762239?uo=4" title="Sister Crayon Itunes"] and a new album is coming soon!
